Splitting Transactions
Split a single transaction into multiple categories. Perfect for purchases that span different spending areas, like a grocery trip that includes both food and household items.
When to Split
Split transactions when a single purchase includes multiple categories:
β’ Walmart trip with groceries + clothes + electronics
β’ Restaurant bill split between business and personal
β’ Amazon order with various item types
How to Split
1. Click on any transaction to open details
2. Click "Split Transaction"
3. Add split rows with amounts and categories
4. Ensure splits add up to the original amount
5. Save
Split Equally
Once you have two or more split rows, click "Split equally" to divide the original amount evenly across them. Any rounding remainder is added to the last row so the total still matches exactly.
This is handy for shared bills (rent, utilities, group purchases) where you just need to spread a total across a few categories or housemates.
Calculator-Style Amounts
Amount fields accept addition and subtraction so you don't have to add up totals yourself. Type something like:
β’ "25 + 10 + 8.5" β Add line items together
β’ "50 - 12" β Subtract a refund or discount
The result is evaluated when you tab or click out of the field. Invalid expressions just leave the previous value in place.
Percent Mode
Use the % toggle at the top of the split modal to switch how you enter amounts. In percent mode, each row's value is treated as a percentage of the total β so "30" on a $200 transaction becomes $60.
Switch back to currency mode any time; the underlying amounts are preserved.
Managing Splits
Split transactions show a "split" indicator. Click to see all parts.
You can edit splits anytime - adjust amounts, change categories, or unsplit back to a single transaction.
Each split part is tracked separately in budgets and reports.
Tips
β’ Splits must add up to exactly the original amount
