FinWise
YNAB

Simple and easy to use

FinWise is designed to be simple and easy to use. The UI is clean, intuitive and responsive.
YNAB has a steep learning curve and can be difficult and cumbersome to use, and the UI can be confusing.

Flexible, customizable budgeting

FinWise lets you choose how you want to budget. Use either the default expense tracker mode, or switch to envelop and zero budgeting mode.
YNAB only supports zero budgeting mode.

Multi currency

FinWise supports 100+ currencies worldwide, and does automatic conversion into your base currency of your accounts and transactions.
FinWise supports 100+ currencies worldwide, and you can link accounts from all over the world.

Collaborative budgeting

FinWise makes it easy to budget and manage your money collaboratively with your partner or family.
YNAB has no ability to collaborate or share budgets with your partner or family.

Extremely accurate auto-categorization

FinWise has an extremely accurate and reliable transaction auto-categorization engine which learns and improves as you use it, powered by AI and machine learning.
YNAB does not support auto-categorization, so you have to manually set categories for each transaction.

Comprehensive trends and analysis

FinWise makes it easy to monitor spending trends with a very comprehensive trends and analysis tool, allowing you to get deep insights into your finances.
YNAB has a very basic spending and net-worth report.

FinWise is affordable

FinWise is more affordable than YNAB, charging less than 40% of what YNAB charges.
YNAB is more expensive than FinWise.

When you might pick YNAB instead

YNAB is the right choice if you specifically want the YNAB methodology — strict zero-based budgeting, the four rules, and the envelope mindset — and you are willing to invest the time those rules require. YNAB's teaching content, community, and opinionated workflow are unmatched. If you want a more flexible budget that does not enforce a methodology, plus net worth, multi-currency, and broader country coverage, FinWise is the better fit.

Migrating from YNAB to FinWise

You can bring your full history into FinWise in a few minutes. Here is what to expect:
  1. Export your YNAB data. In YNAB, go to Budget Settings → Export Budget Data. You will get a ZIP file with your budget, register, and plan as CSV.
  2. Create your FinWise account. Sign up for free. The free tier supports CSV import and manual accounts indefinitely.
  3. Connect your banks. FinWise links banks directly — US/Canada via Plaid, UK/EU via GoCardless, South Africa via Gathr — so you do not need to manually reconcile every transaction the way YNAB requires.
  4. Import your YNAB register. Bring in your full transaction history via CSV. Categories will need to be remapped — FinWise uses a flatter category model than YNAB.
  5. Rebuild budgets (your way). Set up monthly category budgets, with rollovers on the categories you want them. You are not forced into zero-based; spend down where it makes sense and let surplus roll forward where it does.
