FinWise
Monarch

Beautiful, intuitive design

FinWise has a clean, modern interface designed to be intuitive, easy to use but still powerful.
Monarch has a clunky and dated design, which can be difficult and slow to use.

Extremely accurate auto-categorization

FinWise has an extremely accurate and reliable transaction auto-categorization engine which learns and improves as you use it.
Monarch's auto-categorization makes lots of mistakes and often needs to be re-categorized manually.

Multi currency

FinWise supports 100+ currencies worldwide, and you can link accounts from all over the world.
Monarch only supports USD, and has limited CAD support.

Comprehensive trends and analysis

FinWise makes it easy to monitor spending trends with a very comprehensive trends and analysis tool, allowing you to get deep insights into your finances.
Monarch has a very basic trends and sankey report.

FinWise is affordable

FinWise is more affordable than Monarch, charging less than 40% of what Monarch charges.
Monarch is more expensive than FinWise.

When you might pick Monarch instead

Monarch Money is a strong choice if you are US-based, manage your money entirely in USD, and have a heavy investment workflow spanning many custodial and brokerage accounts. Monarch has invested deeply in investment-account aggregation and reporting. If multi-country, multi-currency, native mobile, or a developer API are not priorities for you, Monarch's feature set is excellent. For everyone else — and especially anyone outside the United States — FinWise is the better fit.

Migrating from Monarch to FinWise

You can bring your full history into FinWise in a few minutes. Here is what to expect:
  1. Export from Monarch. In Monarch Money, go to Settings → Data → Export. Download your transactions, accounts, and categories as CSV.
  2. Create a FinWise account. Sign up for free. You can stay on the free tier indefinitely for manual accounts and CSV import.
  3. Re-link your banks. Connect your accounts through FinWise. The US and Canada use Plaid (same aggregator Monarch uses), so your bank-link flow will feel familiar. The UK, EU, and South Africa use GoCardless and Gathr.
  4. Import your Monarch history. Bring in your Monarch CSV. FinWise normalizes categories and merchants, and you can edit the mapping during import.
  5. Set up budgets and household sharing. FinWise budgets support rollovers and flexible categories. If you and a partner shared a Monarch household, set up FinWise household sharing for the same workflow.
