FinWise vs Vault22

See how FinWise compares with Vault22

FinWise
Vault22

Beautiful, intuitive design

FinWise has a clean, modern interface designed to be intuitive, easy to use but still powerful.
Vault22 has a clunky and dated design, which can be difficult and slow to use.

Multi currency

FinWise supports 100+ currencies worldwide, and you can link accounts from all over the world.
Vault22 does not support multi currency, and only works with South African banks.

Collaborative budgeting

FinWise makes it easy to budget and manage your money collaboratively with your partner or family.
Vault22 has no ability to collaborate or share budgets with your partner or family.

Extremely accurate auto-categorization

FinWise has an extremely accurate and reliable transaction auto-categorization engine which learns and improves as you use it.
Vault22 has unreliable transaction categorization that often requires manual adjustments and tweaks which can be tedious.

Comprehensive trends and analysis

FinWise makes it easy to monitor spending trends with a comprehensive trends and analysis tool, allowing you to get deep insights into your finances.
Vault22 only has a basic monthly spend report with some high-level insights.

Private, secure and independent

FinWise charges a small subscription fee to sustain the business and to remain independent, and we respect your privacy and will never sell your data.
Vault22 is owned by Old Mutual and they seem to be trying to sell Old Mutual products and services through Vault22.

When you might pick Vault22 instead

Vault22 is a natural choice if you are a long-time Old Mutual customer and want tight integration with Old Mutual's investment and advisory products, or if you specifically want the 22seven legacy experience you are already used to. For South Africans who want a modern interface, multi-currency support for cross-border accounts, household sharing, and a faster mobile experience, FinWise is the better fit.

Migrating from Vault22 to FinWise

You can bring your full history into FinWise in a few minutes. Here is what to expect:
  1. Export your Vault22 data. From the Vault22 web app, export your transactions as CSV. You may need to export each linked account separately depending on your plan.
  2. Sign up for FinWise. Create a free FinWise account. The free tier supports CSV import and manual accounts indefinitely.
  3. Connect your South African banks. FinWise links Capitec, FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank, Absa, Investec, Discovery, and more via Gathr — the leading open-banking aggregator in South Africa.
  4. Add cross-border accounts. If you also have USD, GBP, or EUR accounts, FinWise tracks them in their native currency and rolls everything into a single ZAR (or USD/GBP/EUR) net-worth view.
  5. Import your Vault22 history. Bring in your full CSV history. Categories are normalized automatically; you can adjust merchant rules afterwards.
